Collaborative project NEREIDS is an association of 16 different institutions to monitor and ship detection. Maritime surveillance is of strategic importance for the European Union and thus represents an important task in ensuring sea transport safety (including countermeasures against piracy, monitoring of transport of hazardous goods), management of pollution (such as oil spils) and countering illegal migration. Such tasks need to be provided with more timely and reliable information to improve their situational awareness and increase their reaction capability. Within the project methods for detecting and identifying unknown ships and boats inside and outside EU waters from satellite, radar and optical images are explored and developed.
