The National Geographic magazine has initiated a sustainable tourism program in the Maya area in 1989. In the year 1992 the Mesoamerican governments established the Mundo Maya Organization (MMO) to preserve archaeological heritage and establish tourist routes in the region. Programs of MMO are financed by different organizations, including the Inter-American Development Bank. The Mundo Maya portal including an interactive GIS map of most of the Maya area has been prepared. We collected and processed the data, selected the tools and elaborated the views. The site, designed and implemented in ArcIMS (ESRI), enables effective management of cultural places and trails, allows exchange of data and performs basic analyses and visualisations.
