The purpose of the project was to apply geographic information systems and remote sensing techniques, based on satellite imagery and aerial photography, in the analyses and interpretation of a large corpus of archaeological field data pertaining to the Maya culture and collected in the course of the project of Archaeological Reconnaissance in Southern Campeche, Mexico. The results shed light on specific questions concerning paleolandscape, optimal communication routes, regional political organization, and causal relations between hierarchical settlement distribution, sociopolitical processes, and natural and related economic factors.
