Zois Prize 2024 for Prof. Dr. Ivan Šprajc

Zois Prize for outstanding achievements in Mesoamerican archaeological and archaeoastronomical research
Published on: October 14, 2024

We are proud to announce that Prof. Dr. Ivan Šprajc, Head of the Institute of Anthropological and Spatial Studies of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, has been awarded this year's Zois Prize for his outstanding achievements in the field of archaeological and archaeoastronomical research in Mesoamerica. According to the justification, Šprajc "has significantly advanced our understanding of astronomical orientation in pre-Hispanic Mesoamerican architecture through his pioneering research. His innovative methodology revealed how ancient peoples used astronomy to orient buildings and mark critical moments in the agricultural cycle. The archaeological expeditions he led to the Yucatan Peninsula uncovered not only large urban centres but also a number of small settlements and other remnants of past life, greatly expanding our knowledge of Maya settlement patterns, economy and political geography. His work has profoundly deepened our insight into the development of ancient civilisations and contributed to the preservation of the world's cultural heritage". Congratulations to the winner of this prestigious award!

The winners of the prizes and awards, including the Puh Prizes for Outstanding Achievement and Lifetime Achievement, the Zois Awards, the Zois Prizes for Outstanding Achievement and the Lifetime Achievement Award, were announced today at a press conference of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation of the Republic of Slovenia. On their website the full list of 2025 winners is available. We would like to congratulate all the winners.
